Materials Required: Air Filter. Spark Plug. Oil. Blades

Every spring I tune my mower up to survive the beating it will take all summer. If your mower feels underpowered or is bogging down it may also mean it is time for a tune up.

Step One: Replace the air filter.

Remove the front cover of the air box. Take off old filter and replace with new one.

Step Two: Change spark Plug

Pull off the spark plug wire. Unscrew the spark plug most are either 5/8” or 13/16” pretty universal. Most spark plugs come pre gapped so buy a new one and make sure it is pregapped. Screw in the new one making sure not to cross thread it during the process. Turn it ¼ turn past hand tight but do not over tighten. Plug the spark plug wire back into your newly replaced plug.

Step Three: Change oil

I like to run my mower for a little bit to get the oil sludge moving and not just sitting in the bottom of the pan. Turn off the mower and turn it on its side to drain the oil out. Its 2020 I know, but we still turn our mowers on their side to drain the oil. Replace the amount of oil you drained and screw the top back on. Be sure to let the oil drain down into the pan before you check the dipstick. Check to make sure you are in the safe operating range.

Replace or sharpen your blades

I had been making this blade limp for 2 summers and it was time for a new one. Unscrew the old blade and screw on the new one.

Your mower should be running nice and smooth after a tune up.
